The five variables that decide everything
1. Temperature at the hair shaft
What matters is not the number on the dryer — it is the temperature where the air actually meets your hair. That is why a high setting used well can be gentler than a low setting used badly. Four heat modes exist so you can match the heat to the hair in front of you, not so you can default to the hottest one.
2. Distance from the nozzle
Air cools rapidly as it leaves the nozzle, so distance is the single most powerful control you have. Halving your distance does far more than nudging the heat setting up a notch. This is also the variable people are worst at judging, because a hand-held dryer creeps closer as your arm tires — one of the underrated advantages of drying from a fixed tripod position. 3. Dwell time
Holding the airflow still on one section concentrates energy in one place. Keeping the dryer moving spreads the same total energy across far more hair. Continuous movement is close to free protection — it costs nothing and changes a great deal.
4. Moisture level when you start
Soaking-wet hair is at its most vulnerable, and blasting heat at it forces water to leave faster than the structure comfortably allows. Towel-dry or air-dry to damp before the dryer comes near. Equally, drying hair that is already dry is pure damage with no benefit — stop when it is dry, not when it feels hot.
5. Ionic drying and the cold shot
Ionic output helps break up water droplets so hair dries with less prolonged heat exposure, and it reduces the static that causes flyaways. A genuine ice-cold shot at the end cools the hair to set the style without adding more heat — the cheapest habit upgrade in this entire list, and the one most people skip.

Reading your score
- 8–10 — Resilient. Your routine is working. Protect it: keep the cold shot at the end of every dry and resist creeping the heat up out of habit.
- 5–7 — Early strain. The classic pattern of slightly too hot, slightly too close, slightly too long. Increase your distance, drop one heat mode, and keep the dryer moving. This range usually improves quickly.
- 0–4 — Under pressure. Change the routine rather than adding more product. Always start from damp rather than soaking. Use a lower heat mode with a higher speed — airflow dries, heat damages. Finish every session cold. Give ends a rest from heat where you can, and let a trim remove damage that no technique can reverse.

- Towel-dry to damp before the dryer starts.
- Set your distance deliberately, and let the tripod hold it for you.
- Keep moving — never park the airflow on one section.
- Reach for more speed before you reach for more heat.
- Finish cold, every single time.
- Stop the moment hair is dry.
